If your short on money go for AVG free edition or Avast, these will both offer great minimum protection and it's for free. All of those recommended products come with regular updates, as new viruses emerge your software will evolve to tackle these.
Another tip is to ensure your Firewall is turned on by going to control panel in Windows XP, then Security Centre (if classic view), then Firewall and click enable. This will protect you from intrusions to your data. If your running another firewall program then don't turn on the windows firewall.
